Network Automation Engineer
GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Network Automation Engineer works closely with the Network Design & Automation team in designing the overall network architecture, creating configuration standards, network device evaluation, and automation implementation for all devices in the UTOPIA Fiber network. They will also work with the Network Engineering team to plan network maintenance to expand network capacity, implement critical core network changes, and address service impacting issues. The Network Automation Engineer will work with Network Engineering, Network Operations Center (NOC), Field Services Group (FSG), and Customer Service Representatives (CSR) to solve operational issues and respond to network outages that require escalation.
Performs additional duties as assigned by their supervisor.
Education and Experience
The Network Automation Engineer should have the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, networking or related field
- Two years of experience in Network Engineering
- Or an equivalent combination of education or experience
Supervisor:
The Network Automation Engineer will report to the DevOps Manager
Skill Set:
You will likely have
- 1-2 years network engineering and troubleshooting experience.
- Experience working in an Internet Service Provider (ISP) environment.
- Experience in interacting with customers to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
You should be comfortable working with
- IPv4/v6
- BGP, IS-IS, OSPF
- MPLS and its associated signaling protocols
- QoS
- Layer 2 VPN services such as VPLS/EVPN and E-Tree/E-LAN/E-Line based designs and VLANs
- DHCP / DNS / NTP / SNMP / etc
- ACLs
- OSI Model
- Linux
- Data analysis
- Python software development
- Network Monitoring Systems
- Network Automation / Auto-configuration
- Interfaces for working with networking devices (gRPC, netconf, SNMP, etc.)
- Outside plant equipment installation standards
- Industry standards and practices for outage response
You should have some familiarity with
- EVPN, Segment Routing
- IGMP/Multicast
- Python and YAML
- Spanning Tree Protocols (RSTP, PVST+, etc.)
- Open access models and network design from a fiber to the premise perspective
Having some knowledge about these areas is desirable
- WDM components and their use in a fiber network design/operation
- Django framework
- Fiber deployment technologies such as Active Ethernet and PON
- Docker
- PHP and shell scripting
- Git
- CI/CD
Certifications:
Nokia NRS II or CCNP preferred
Work Environment:
Typical office setting with typical climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, which do not generally require muscular strain. Extensive sitting and keyboard functions creating various degrees of eye-strain and muscle tension. Job functions normally require talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required for most essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and guided problem solving. Periodic exposure to seasonal elements when local and regional travel is required to work at hut and cabinet locations.
Screening:

- A valid, lawful driver’s license is required at time of appointment
Pre-Employment Testing:
Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation.
Compensation:
Salary depends on applicant qualifications. This is a UTOPIA Fiber full-time salary position and includes UTOPIA Fiber benefits package including URS retirement plan, health insurance with HSA option, dental insurance, and several other benefits.
